I first discovered UrbanSpoon when the Apple App Store launched. It was the first app I downloaded for my phone and continues to be one of my most-used applications. The app utilizes GPS technology and features a fun “shake” function that mimics a slot machine, helping users decide where to eat with a simple flick of the wrist. As a wine blogger, I often review restaurants and have leveraged UrbanSpoon to enhance my visibility, ensuring my reviews are easily accessible on their platform. From a blogger’s perspective, I’ve consistently received prompt customer service and tech support from the UrbanSpoon team.
Today, IAC announced that they have acquired UrbanSpoon, a move that makes sense given the app’s existing integration with CitySearch, which is also part of IAC. Additionally, IAC is an investor in OpenTable, and I would love to see a seamless integration of their services with UrbanSpoon. According to the press release:
"For IAC, UrbanSpoon rounds out a portfolio of premium local brands which include Citysearch, ServiceMagic, InsiderPages, and strategic investments in OpenTable and MerchantCircle. With a wealth of trusted restaurant content, an avid user community, and a leading iPhone application, the acquisition of UrbanSpoon will further solidify IAC’s leadership role in the local space. Integrating UrbanSpoon’s content across IAC’s local sites, including Citysearch and InsiderPages, further reiterates IAC’s commitment to building a robust infrastructure of local content for consumers all across the web."
UrbanSpoon will continue to operate as an independent company, remaining based in Seattle, and will report to Jay Herratti, who oversees Citysearch, InsiderPages, and Evite. While the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, sources suggest that the acquisition is likely in the millions of dollars range. The original UrbanSpoon team is staying on board, and they have exciting new improvements planned for the app. I’m optimistic that this influx of resources and support will only enhance UrbanSpoon’s offerings and user experience. Updated Information (2023)
As of 2023, UrbanSpoon has undergone significant changes since its acquisition by IAC. The app has rebranded itself as Zomato, reflecting a broader strategy to expand its global reach and enhance its features. The integration with CitySearch and OpenTable has led to a more comprehensive dining experience, allowing users to not only discover restaurants but also make reservations directly through the app.
Zomato has also embraced user-generated content, encouraging diners to share their experiences and reviews, which has fostered a vibrant community of food enthusiasts. The app now includes features such as personalized recommendations based on user preferences, enhanced search filters, and a more intuitive interface.
In a competitive landscape, Zomato continues to innovate, introducing new functionalities like food delivery services and partnerships with local businesses. The commitment to improving the user experience remains strong, and the app has solidified its position as a go-to resource for food lovers everywhere.
With the backing of IAC and a dedicated team, Zomato is poised for continued growth and success in the ever-evolving world of dining and restaurant discovery.
